RED LION (circa 1700)

RED LION (circa 1700) A lovely early 18th century English provincial tent stitch picture. The large flowers on the right and the chunky block shading is reminiscent of the treatment done on other pastoral pieces of this period. The oak tree, spotted dog, red lion, and feline form on right (possibly a panther) are
all stitched in tent stitch, as is most of the background although one area is worked in queen stitch and another uses silk chenille which is couched down. Formerly in the collection of The Essamplaire.
Original sampler shown in photo.
