NORWEGIAN SAMPLER (1724)

NORWEGIAN SAMPLER (1724)Scandinavian samplers of this time period often feature the borders of eight pointed stars worked in satin stitch, as well as many religious motifs which are also found on many continential European samplers. The crucifixion is central on this particular sampler, surrounded by an hourglass, stag, birds, ladder (symbol of the Passion), dog (faithfulness), jugs, chicken and rooster (overcomes the darkness, evil spirits), wreaths (eternity), and a Jesu Gram found on a number of Scandinavian samplers. The initials of family members were almost always worked in as well. Our sampler is reproduced from the Kunstindustrimuseet i Oslo, Norway access no. OK4271.
It uses cross, satin, and a cross stitch variation.
