Rafaela Recio-1831
Rafaelas sampler is of Spanish origin. As a number of other Spanish samplers it was worked around all four edges with different border patterns along each edge. All these bands are worked in satin stitch. The corners are filled with lovely corner motifs and in the centre Rafaela worked the usual alphabet and two different styles of numbers. One is in a regular number style and the other in Roman numerals, not often seen on samplers. The double headed eagle is seen on samplers from different countries in Europe as is the reclining stag, the fountain with birds (eternal life) and pots of flowers. Quite a few of these samplers were used as table mats. Spanish text reads," Lehizo Rafaela Recio. en las amigas de la compania de Cordoba ano de 1831. The original sampler is in
the Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of New Mexico. Accession number: A.80-36.327.
Stitches used are satin, cross stitch, lazy daisy stitch, reversible cross, foursided stitch, double running and algerian eye stitch.
