BEIDTS TIMENS (circa 1750)
This sampler is from Southwest Friesland, one of the northern provinces in the Netherlands. The name "Beidts" hails from this area. Two marriage dates are listed for a Beidts Timens, one in 1756 and one in 1675. It is highly likely that the earlier date applies to our Beidts which dates the
sampler to approximately 1746. There are a number of samplers spanning a period of about 125 years which contain many of the same geometric motifs and broad based trees. One such sampler in the collection of The Essamplaire and dated 1693, has the same "H's" on it. The alphabets contain nineteen letters which are seen on the earlier Friesian and North Holland samplers. The J & I are interchangeable and the Q, X, Y, & Z were not used in names so Beidts did not stitch them. Our sampler is reproduced from one in the collection of the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, Friesland, access no. FM1957-91.
Stitches used are cross, eyelet, and back stitch.
