VA-1793 Aalsmeer

VA-1793 AalsmeerNew! This sampler is new to our collection.

This sampler was made in the town of Aalsmeer in the province of North Holland. This was a Mennonite community and the girls stitched their samplers using red and green silks. There are a number of these samplers that have the five wise and five foolish virgins, and Jesus in the middle. Note the girls on the right do not have oil in there lamps so they aren't burning. Each of the letters above the girls stands for a word which makes up a verse based on Mathew 25:1 . Most of these samplers also contain geometric motifs and flower pots. This group of samplers dates from 1709-1800. They seem to originate with the oldest Aalsmeer families with the names of Jeessen, Maarse, Alderden, Spaargaren, Vreeken, Buis, Hanse, Heeren.
