Alida Fooke

Alida Fooke Alida made her sampler at the age of 12 in the Burgerweeshuis in Amsterdam, one of the many orphanages. Her parents were Jan Jacob Fooke and Wilhelmina Dorathea Muller. The top rows of alphabets worked in red are very typical of this orphanage as are the inclusion of her parents and her name and the crowns below this. The numerous initials are from teachers and the female directors of the orphanage.
Her father was a barge carrier and her mother a servant, they were married June 17, 1863. They had three daughters, Johanna Petronella born in 1870, Wilhelmina Dorothea born in 1865 and Alida who was born 1868 and died at age 55 on June 22, 1923. She had been a nurse.
The initials GWE stand for G. W. Elserman, she was the linen mother.
