The Butterfly Spot Sampler~ circa 1650
A gorgeous English spot sampler from the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, accession no. 43.280.
The realistic flowers, birds and butterfly could be found on various household articles such as cushions and sewwt bags. The geometric motifs could be repeated numerous times to make a larger textile.
Tis sampler is worked almost entirely in queen stitch with some double running stitches.
