SARAH OWENS

SARAH OWENSThe stitcher, Sarah Owens, was nine years old when she completed her sampler in Newark Ohio in 1839. Not a great deal is known about Sarah. It is believed that she was a student of Caroline L. (Oliver) Seymour, who's own sampler is in the collection of the Licking County Historical
Society. The geometric band along the bottom, the verses, and the basket all match motifs on her teacher's sampler. Stitches used are cross, cross over one, and algerian eye. The original measures 17 1/2" x 17" and was stitched on an uneven weave linen. We would like to thank Sue Studebaker,
author of "Ohio is my Dwelling Place," for kindly giving us permission to reproduce this Ohio sampler from her collection.
