Anno 1674- Hoorn sampler

Anno 1674- Hoorn samplerAnno 1674- Hoorn sampler A lovely sampler made by GI in 1674 in or around the city of Hoorn in the province of North Holland. There are a number of samplers, similar in style and made around the same time period. They all include the galloping dappled horse with a long tail and clipped mane,
the large peacock, clasped hands (faithfulness), the swans on either side of a small tree of life, the single rose on top of a basket and some of the same bands and in particular the band with birds in it. The city of Hoorn was know for the horse markets held there. Joshua and Caleb, the grape carriers are dressed in the style of the day with their hats on at a jaunty angle. The bunch of grapes represent Christ, wine and blood have the same meaning in the Christian religion, it represents their salvation. A winged heart and a pierced heart are found on GI’s sampler as well, the pierced heart is an old Christian symbol and was a favorite motif stitched on both North Holland and Friesland samplers, on the samplers, it is a marriage symbol.
Stitches used are cross, stitch, double running, satin stitch and algerian eye.
