Jean Porter- 1710

Jean Porter- 1710Jean started her charming band sampler on May 14th, 1709 and she finished it on April 6th, 1710, therefore it took her almost a year to make. The dogs are often featured on samplers from Scotland. A number of the bands stitched are similar to ones worked in the previous century. The putties or angel boys are another throwback to the 17th century. The women in the second pictorial band have more or less the same stance as the putties but now they are wearing skirts. The crowns are another common element on Scottish samplers and the colour red and green are as well.

The sampler is worked with long armed cross, double running stitch, montenegrin in the bottom band, some satin stitch and some stem stitch.
