JEVEL D. BOYLE (1714)

JEVEL D. BOYLE (1714)This sampler is of Scottish origin and typical of many samplers from this time, in its use of the bright red and green colors, ornate lettering and coarse linen background. At this period in time, the letters "I" and "J" were interchangeable. The initials "IB" are found at the end of the
Algerian eye alphabet and the name Jevel D. Boyle was written on the back. The crowns at the bottom are most likely of family members although they could stand for crowns of nobility (possibly of her family).
Stitches used are Algerian eye, cross and double running (holbein).
