MARY BURGESS - 1725Mary stitched her earliest known Rhode Island band sampler at the age of ten and she completed it in August of 1725. the inscription reads "This needle work of mine can tell when a child is learned well, that by my elders, I was taught not to spend time for nought." It is reminiscent of band samplers worked in England during this time. Mary's sampler is from the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, access no. 45.763.
Stitches used are
cross, montenegrin, marking stitch, algerian eye, cross over one, satin, double running and long armed cross The original measures 7 3/16" x 16 3/16".
