RAMONA STUYCK (1828)

RAMONA STUYCK (1828)A lovely small Spanish sampler and like the older ones it is almost entirely covered with border patterns which are worked in satin stitch parallel to the four sides. Unlike the older ones, ours contain the alphabet and some motifs in the center - like the eight pointed star (Star of Bethlehem) and two corner motifs. The older samplers often had a heraldic figure in the center. Ramona is a descendant from the Stuyck family who still operate and manage the "Real Fabrica de Tapices y Alfombras" in Madrid (started in 1720). They repair and restore old Flemish Tapestries, as well as reproducing them.
Stitches used are satin, cross, Algerian eye, four sided and double running. Original sampler in
photograph.
