TR-1784
TR's sampler is from the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. The rows of satin stitch birds, hearts and stars were used on the collars and cuffs of linen shirts but then were generally stitched in white linen thread. These patterns and the alphabets outlined with double running or
backstitches and circles are seen most frequently on Friesland samplers. The rows of alphabets are another indication that a sampler is from Friesland as they placed more of an emphasis on the alphabets than they did in the province of Groningen, where they made similar samplers. TR
stitched five different alphabets consisting of 19-20 letters each along with numerous sets of initials, presumably family members. Her ornate large initials placed on either side of a tree of life (feather tree) are seen often on samplers from this province.
